Since childhood I have known God's presence in the grandeur of glacial lakes nestled among high Sierra peaks and in the miracle of new buds in an urban garden. But those experiences were not Jewish. Meanwhile, Jewish worship and social action were utterly divorced from the natural world. For me, it is not enough to be among “Jews who camp” or to read the morning blessings alongside a trail – wonderful as these innovations are. I am grateful for Rabbi Michael Comins' efforts to develop distinctly Jewish worship and meditation practices and eco-kashrut while engaging our traditional texts, thus connecting us with our deepest sense of God and social justice in the natural environment.
